Prostate

Similar to the rest of the male reproductive system, the lumen of the prostate gland is surrounded by pseudo stratified epithelial cells with some basal cells. The prostate is arranged in a series of ball shaped glands called tubuloalveolar glands. Within the glands are serous cells producing the majority of the prostate secretions. There is then a thick submucosal layer with a lot of mucous glands. Between the tubuloalveolar glands you will find smooth muscle. Different portions of the prostate gland may also have the urethra or the ejaculatory duct in them The photos on this page were taken by me in the fall of 2009 or spring of 2010.
