The Os Coxae

Half Hip

The page starts with a lateral view of a right os coxae. First, try to identify the ileum, ischium and pubic bones. Then try to find the landmarks. The colored plus buttons give you labeled landmarks from anterior, medial, posterior, and lateral view. All but the lateral view will appear on the model.

Ilium

  • Ala - Wing like structure making up most of bone.
  • Anterior inferior spine - Spine found below superior spine on anterior side. It is the bottom of the 2 orange stickers and below the U supporting the model.
  • Anterior superior spine - Spine found above inferior spine on anterior side. It is the top of the 2 orange stickers and above the U supporting the model.
  • Arucular surface - Ear like structure on posterior-medial surface
  • Gluteal lines - 3 lines on the lateral surface. Inferior is not clear on either picture. Posterior and anterior are very faint. Don't stress over them.
  • Iliac crest - crest along superior surface running from anterior superior spine to posterior superior spine.
  • Iliac fossa -indentation found on medial surface of body.
  • Posterior inferior spine - Spine found below superior spine on anterior side. It is the bottom of the 2 orange stickers on the posterior. It is the top of the sciatic notch.
  • Posterior superior spine - Spine found above inferior spine on anterior side. It is the top of the 2 orange stickers on the posterior side. This is the end of the iliac crest
  • Sciatic notch - Large notch found between posterior inferior spine and ischial spine.

Pubis or Pubic Bone

  • Body - structure on anterior-medial surface that the 2 rami come into.
  • Inferior pubic ramus - Broad straight extension from the body towards the ischium on inferior side
  • Pubic Tubercle - Anterior-superior side of body.
  • Superior pubic ramus - Broad straight extension from the body towards the ileum. Oh, its superior.
  • Symphyseal surface - Medial side of body of pubic bone.

Ischium

  • Ischial ramus - extension from body towards pubic bone. On inferior side of os coxa
  • Ischial spine - Spine that is inferior to sciatic notch
  • Ischial tuberosity - Large knob on posterior side of body.

shared

  • Acetablum - Round socket made by all 3 bones on lateral side
  • Obutator Foramen - Large circular formane inferior to acetablum. Inferior side of foramen is made up of ischial and inferior pubic rami
