The Humerus

Video description

Model to rotate

The page starts with a posterior view of a right humerus. The proximal end is to your left and the distal end is to your right. The red plus will bring up the picture in your lab book with anterior and posterior views. If you click full screen, the 4 arrows, on the labeled image, it will give you an enlarged version that is easier to read. Find the landmarks below.

Posterior

  • Anatomical neck - Narrow grove attaching the head to the rest of the bone.
  • Head - Large round structure facing medially on the proximal epiphysis.
  • Greater tubercle - Enlarge knob on the lateral side of the proximal epiphysis.
  • Lateral Epicondyle - Lateral to the capitulum on the lateral side of the distal epiphysis.
  • Medial epicondyle - medial to the trochlea on the medial side of the distal epiphysis.
  • Olecranon fossa - Indentation superior to the trochlea on the distal epiphysis.
Anterior
  • Anatomical neck - Narrow grove attaching the head to the rest of the bone.
  • Capitulum - Rounded structure on the anterior-lateral side. Looks sort of like a condyle.
  • Coronoid fossa - Indentation superior to the trochlea on the distal epiphysis.
  • Deltoid tuberosity - rough region about one third of the way down the diaphysis on the lateral side.
  • Greater tubercle - Enlarge knob on the lateral side of the proximal epiphysis.
  • Head - Large round structure facing medially on the proximal epiphysis.
  • Lateral Epicondyle - Lateral to the capitulum on the lateral side of the distal epiphysis.
  • Lesser tubercle - Enlarged knob on the anterior side of the proximal epiphysis
  • Medial epicondyle - medial to the trochlea on the medial side of the distal epiphysis.
  • Surgical neck - Narrowing of the diaphysis inferior to the proximal epiphysis.
  • Trochlea - On the distal epiphysis on the anterior-medial side. Looks like a pully.
